An ignited butt was believed to have sparked a fire in a basement room of a house in Albury’s Kiewa Street about 9.45am on Thursday.
It spread to damage a painting, carpet and lounge setting before an occupant noticed smoke coming from downstairs of the hillside home near the Mercy hospital.
Albury Civic fire station captain John Vandeven said it appeared a cigarette butt was not fully extinguished when thrown away.
“It’s just a warning to people, if they’re smokers, make sure their cigarettes are out before they are discarded,” Mr Vandeven said.
“It was fortunate they were home, if they weren’t at home it could have been a lot worse and spread to the rest of the home.”
