Ron Mildren is disappointed the GO Local Media Group has been granted the money for its event at Junction Place in September.

"I have a reservation...not because it's not a good event, not because it's not going to do good things for the community," Cr Mildren said when the request was backed by council this month

"I just don't feel it's appropriate for ratepayers' money to be (provided for) sponsorship for private companies when they're undertaking private activities."

Cr Mildren fears it will set a precedent for other firms to be similarly supported.

GO Local Magazine editor Bernadette Torresan said she believed "it's council's obligation to help businesses".

She held an initial fashion show in Albury Library-Museum last September and had in-kind support from Albury Council.

"I was aware there were some boutiques locally closing down and being passionate about fashion I decided to put something together that was going to assist local retailers and designers to showcase their products," Torresan said.

"That's why I think council is doing the right thing, it's supporting my vision to help retailers and designers."

The Wodonga event, a two-hour show, will be held at Junction Place with 140 garments already booked to be modelled.

"For myself for this I'm up for $35,000, that's covering advertising costs, council hire, marquee hire, staging, lighting," Torresan said.

She plans to flip the event annually between Albury and Wodonga with a venue other than the library earmarked for the 2020 show north of the Murray River.

Torresan did have support from Wodonga councillor Danny Lowe.

"This is a magazine that sits in every Qantas lounge in Australia and it's local and I think we should be really getting behind and supporting a magazine like this that broadens our profile," Cr Lowe said.

"I think our sponsorship is $1500 and it's $100,000 to put this event on, so in the whole scheme of things the benefit and return on investment back to our community far outweigh the $1500."
