The game was all tied up at half time, with a dominant last quarter from the Hawks proving the difference in the end.
The match up of Kiewa's Darcy Aumont and Rutherglen's Emily Browne in the midcourt highlighted the closeness of the game, with both players putting up strong performances.
That was backed for the Hawks by the efforts of goal keeper Ellen Cook, who added defensive pressure in the win.
Kiewa Sandy Creek coach Kathy Evans said it was a whole team effort by her side.
"We knew we were in for a tough day at the office and it was tight all game," Evans said.
"It was a really high standard game of netball and the girls played in good spirits."
Rutherglen shooters Lily Buckingham and Brittney Deegan shot 11 each, while Haylee Penny was the leading scorer for the Hawks with 20 goals.
Both Kiewa and Rutherglen now sit on three wins and one loss this season.
"We've had a challenging draw, but we're happy with how we're settling in," Evans said.
