Firefighters and paramedics were called to the school about 12.50pm on Friday.
The student, Trent Arnold, suffered burns to his face, ears, neck and chest after a camp oven exploded during a class for an upcoming camp.
Paramedics transported the Year 9 student to Albury Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition about half-an-hour after the explosion.
He was flown to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne for treatment and remains in the burns unit.
His mother, Leanne, thanked those who had given messages of support to the family.
"The doctors and nurses at Albury emergency and intensive care were brilliant in their care of our Trent, and I was in awe with the work of the lads from the air ambulance," she wrote online.
"(They are) all continually being gentle and thoughtful of our beautiful boy, talking and reassuring whilst he was awake and then when sedated."
Ms Arnold said her son had suffered swelling and blistering and had been heavily sedated, and said he was in "the best place possible" at the hospital.
Principal Darren Hovey said counselling and support had been offered to other students.
He said the school was supporting the teenager's family.
"We're just waiting to get further reports on his progress at this stage," Mr Hovey said.
"We're concerned for his wellbeing and for those students who were there at the time as well.
"Our thoughts and our prayers go out to Trent and his family.
"They are down there at the hospital with him."
His sister also attends the school.
WorkSafe was immediately notified of the incident, Mr Hovey said.
No-one else was hurt during the explosion.
