And that's exactly what Albury's Paul Gibney has been doing for the past 35 years.
Mr Gibney, a member of the Albury West Rotary Club, has been involved with the Nail Can Hill run all of those years, running the track for the last 25 with wife Anne waiting for him at the finish line.
While Mr Gibney puts in the hard yards training to tackle the hills, he has also been involved with the hard work that goes on behind the scenes in staging the annual event.
While he may not speed past Steve Moneghetti to cross the line and claim first prize, Mr Gibney has another personal goal in mind when he tackles Nail Can year after year- to age bust.
"It was a good solid run and I age bustered, so that's something for me," Mr Gibney said.
To be an age buster, you finish the course in a time that is less than your age.
This year Mr Gibney finished the course with a time of 0:57:26 claiming his own personal goal for the day.
"It's for all levels of competitor, from walkers to social runners," Mr Gibney said.
Nail Can has also somewhat become a family custom for the Gibney's, who took out the family event last year with their three sons competing.
Mrs Gibney said she had seen a lot of the race over the years, as well as the hard work put in by Mr Gibney.
"I'm always there at the end cheering everyone on," Mrs Gibney said.
"It's a great local race and a great challenge.
"It's a real achievement to finish and to be an age buster.
"I think it's a real encouragement for older runners and something to aim for every year."
Someone who is no stranger to busting their age at Nail Can is Dave Cromarty.
Mr Cromarty, who often trains with Mr Gibney, has taken out the title of age buster 21 times and has competed in 26 Nail Can Hill Runs.
"I've been lucky enough to stay healthy and fit at the same time every year," Mr Cromarty said.
"I can't stop now, I have to keep going.
"It's a great social event where you can come and catch up with all of your friends."
Both locals hope to continue racing for years to come.
