The Greens were switched on from the get-go and controlled the contest for the majority of the 90 minutes.
Nik Wheeler replaced the injured Maddison Kempshall in the starting lineup and put the Greens in front inside the first half-an-hour, but had to be substituted before the break.
United doubled its lead in the 62nd minute when star Frenchman Gauthier Robin found the top corner with a stunning strike from 30 yards.
City finished the game strongly and pegged one back late when Tylar Young's header was deemed to have crossed the line with less than five to play, however it wasn't enough.
McLennan was thrilled with the effort of his side.
"Credit to our blokes and what we've been working for all year," he said.
"We knew it was going to be hard, they're a good side, but we executed what we worked on all week - making sure those front three never touched the ball."
"Our back four has been solid and I know we conceded one today, which was unfortunate, but we're building to bigger and better things.
"That's what it's about, it's about beating sides like this - top-four sides.
"We're certainly a top-four side and we've just got to keep working hard on the track and bringing our game style.
"They're hungry, but the good thing about it is we've lost a couple (Harris Lee and Maddison Kempshall) and we bring in two players and they do the job."
Albury City coach Matt Maw admitted United turned up with more hunger and desire than his side.
"A few of my guys were still at Groovin The Moo to be honest," Maw said.
"We had six out last week (at the music festival) and most of those guys came in this week and weren't ready for today.
"We didn't gel the way we did in weeks prior, but we showed enough in that last 15-20 that we'll be comfortable when we play them next time.
"Macca (McLennan) has done well, they're well drilled and very fit."
Myrtleford remained on top of the table with a 3-0 win against Albury Hotspurs, Wangaratta stayed in touch with a 6-2 result against Melrose, Wodonga Diamonds beat crosstown rivals Wodonga Heart 6-1, Boomers saw off St Pats 4-1, while Cobram bounced back with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at home against Twin City.
The ladder after round seven is: Myrtleford 21, Wangaratta 19, Albury United 19, Albury City 15, Cobram 15, Boomers 12, Wodonga Diamonds 7, Twin City 7, Melrose 4, St Pats 3, Albury Hotspurs 1, Wodonga Heart 0.
