The pair, playing shoe-maker Charlie Price and drag queen Lola, will head their first show at the Albury Entertainment Centre tonight.

The Australian production of Kinky Boots based on a film by the same name was the winner of every major Best Musical award.

The Border rendition co-directed by Jeremy Zuber and Claire Moodie is hoped to bring as much excitement, and is McKie's first major role after Les Miserables.

"I had no idea what Kinky Boots was, but quickly did a soundtrack run-through and realised it was Cyndi Lauper and that's why the music was great," he said.

"I thought if I audition, I'll audition for the lead role and landed it.

"It's not a linear character and I've had a lot of in-depth work with the production crew to nail those emotional changes.

"I'm on stage basically the whole time, I don't touch my dressing room."

In comparison, Kebe has no less than 10 costume changes.

"This is my first big production, with singing, acting and dancing; I did Wicked in 2017 with the Civic Theatre Company in Wagga," he said.

"A friend of me let me know about the show ... it's so relevant in today's society where there is so much discrimination.

"It sends such an important message about acceptance, and that's not just acceptance of other people but self-acceptance as well," Kebe said.

McKie said the audience would have as much fun as the cast.

"There are some pretty emotional parts and you might see some tears throughout the audience, but it's a feel-good show," he said.

"There's a lot of movement and colours, it's exciting to watch and I think it will be a lot of fun for everybody."
