The Greens did what they needed to do, defeating Melrose 2-0 at Jelbart Park.
However, St Pats two took points off United's nearest rivals Wangaratta, with a 3-3 draw at South Wangaratta reserve to open up a five-point buffer between first and second.
Star midfielder Mel Crorken and Abbey Collins found the back of the net in the scrappy victory for United.
"We dominated the game, but we played below our standard and struggled to put the ball in the back of the net," Albury United coach Tony Cigana said.
"It was a bit like Thursday night (catch-up game against St Pats) and they were still a bit flat from that.
"But good teams find a way to win."

While St Pats have finished the week thinking what could have been.
The visitors held a 3-1 lead against Wangaratta before two late goals from the Red Devils saw them escape with a point.
After returning to form with a 4-0 victory against Boomers last Sunday, Patties took it right up to league leaders United on Thursday night, before falling 3-2.
Albury City picked up three points due to a forfeit from Boomers.
The ladder after round eight is: Albury United 24, Wangaratta 19, Albury City 15, St Pats 10, Melrose 6, Boomers 6.
