Although it was the side's first win of the season, they still only trail fourth-placed Tumbarumba by four premiership points.
"It was good to win but I felt a bit for Walwa," Nicholas said.
"We were both keen to get our first win.
"The side we had in was pretty good this week.
"It all comes down to getting players on the paddock and we were able to do that on Saturday.
"We won't make finals on percentage but I believe if we get the right blokes playing we will have a reasonable side.
"I think we're a chance."
Corryong looked far better with Steve Langman and Jim Anderson playing while Mitch Harris kicked 10 goals in a best afield performance.
Tom Shanks, Tom Nicholas and Peter Jeffries also played leading roles.
An injury-hit Border-Walwa slipped four goals behind at quarter-time and, despite the best efforts of Myall Hoffmann, Adam Priscina and Michael Linklater, were never in the match.
Cudgewa warmed up for its top-of-the-table clash against Bullioh by thrashing Federal by 143 points.
Although the sides sit second and third on the ladder, the Blues were a class above with Ethan Riddington, Ryan Mee and David Low on fire.
Federal sorely missed Darren Bradshaw, Steve Fouracre and Steve Bradshaw with caretaker coach Troy Price admitting it was tough going.
"They are pretty well structured and coached," Price said.
"I think we had eight or 10 missing from our first 18 picked.
"It's not just about the ones who are out as, because there are no reserves, you are bringing in blokes who aren't playing footy.
"We had three blokes yesterday who traveled over 400 kilometres to play for us.
"It's pretty much week-to-week in the league at the moment."
Big Keiran Brennan was one of Federal's travellers and didn't disappoint with a strong showing in the ruck and up forward.
Andrew Saliba also acquitted himself well.
Bullioh wore down Tumbarumba, winning by 81 points.
While the Roos were competitive early, the in-form Kelvin Wallace and Josh Walters soon broke the shackles.
Wallace, who kicked five majors, was best afield for the third time in four matches this season.
Tumbarumba were best served by James Munday, Reece Borg, Zach Stevens, Will Brooksby and Quinn Rooney.
