Oates' shot from about 45-metres handed the Swans a one-point win to consolidate their position in the top-three after seven rounds.
"It went through the goals and the siren went," co-coach Rick Whitehead said.
"It was a good kick, especially considering he usually plays in the backline.
"He's a bit of a cult figure at the club so the boys were pretty happy."
Whitehead rated the victory as Chiltern's best of the season after the Swans trailed their opponents by 34 points early in the match.
"They blew us away early but we started to play our footy in the second quarter and gradually chipped away," he said.
"It was a really good win, especially at Tallangatta."
Chiltern's Danyl Woods kicked five goals in his return from injury while Ben Mason and Oates also played well.
