The statement was made in a press release issued by independent candidate Jacqui Hawkins after the Victorian budget was handed down on Monday.
Ms Hawkins initially stood by the comment when asked by The Border Mail to provide evidence the cancer centre was facing major funding issues before later retracting the statement and amending her press release.
Albury Wodonga Health chief executive Leigh McJames said the claim was wrong.
"There is no truth in the claim and no-one, particularly our patients, should be concerned about access to treatment," he said.
Oncologist Craig Underhill referred The Border Mail to the health service for the evidence the cancer centre may run out of funding before the end of the financial year.
"Funding for phase one of building works for the emergency department, ICU and theatres at the Albury campus has already been received from the NSW government and works will commence this year," Mr McJames said.
"These works are expected to take approximately 2.5 years to complete at which time we will commence phase two.
"AWH is working with the all governments to secure funding for phase two in 2.5 years.
"AWH will concurrently progress phase one of works on the Wodonga campus with the combined funding of $17.5 million from the Victorian and Commonwealth governments."
The federal Coalition government committed $14.5 million towards the establishment of a mental health rehabilitation unit and other specialist services in its recent budget.
Ms Hawkins said the health service was still being short-changed.
"Albury Wodonga Health has over 60,000 presentations, and one of the busiest maternity units, but gets a fraction of the funding in comparison to Ballarat or Bendigo," she said.
