A FIRE that gutted a unit at Rutherglen is being treated as suspicious.

The interior of the property and its contents were badly damaged by flames, smoke and water, but the structure appeared to be largely undamaged.
A crime scene was set up and specialist arson investigators from Melbourne attended the scene.

Detective Senior Constable Tracy Jarrott said the fire had been deemed suspicious.
"A 30-year-old male from Rutherglen is assisting police with enquiries," she said.
It took firefighters from the Rutherglen, Wahgunyah and Chiltern brigades about 30 minutes to bring the incident under control.
There had initially been concerns that a person may have been inside the home, but no-one was injured.
CFA commander Mark Owens said the fire appeared to have started in the front of the home.
