Albury-Wodonga Bandits women's coach Lauren Jackson spent time with students in the new program headed by Richmond Football Club at Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre on Thursday.
Jackson reflected on key moments in her professional career and also conducted strength and conditioning training for the group of young sporting leaders.
"We had a fairly informal chat in the classroom about life, basketball and coaching," Jackson said.
"I also went through a few things in the gym and did some competitive conditioning drills.
"It's about leadership and connecting and giving them a few pointers."
Jackson was more than happy to be an ambassador of the program.
"Because it's on the Border and with my history in sport, it's a natural thing to be a part of," she said.
"Having something of these standards on the Border is excellent.
"They're not school age, they're a bit older, so I'm able to tell my story a little bit more with them.
"If they're a little bit younger, it's harder to relate with them in terms of my career and my struggles.
Also in sport:
"It's been really good to talk to the students and for them to have the opportunity to understand both sides of sport.
"Whether they want to be coaches or administrators, it gives them a really good base and understanding of team sport."
The four-time Olympian praised the effort and dedication the students have put into the course.
"I don't think when I was their age I would have been motivated enough," she admitted.
"It says a lot about these kids who want to get into sport.
"Richmond has given them a great network of people and teams to work with.
"There's a lot of opportunities they can get by being part of this program."
RISL Wodonga teacher Jess Harris is thrilled to have Jackson on board as an ambassador.
"Someone with her experience at the kids' fingertips - I think they're a little bit starstruck," Harris added.
