And the former secretary and treasurer who used the club's cheque book for her own gain will spend the next 12 months on a community corrections order doing 75 hours of community work.

The Wodonga Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday Maxine Neilson, 61, cashed 25 cheques from the club account totaling $11,830.94.

The court heard it wasn't odd for the cheques to be pre-signed for the use of bills and Neilson used that opportunity for her own gain.

But it wasn't until a Bowls Victoria notice came worth more than $1000 that had supposedly already been paid that the club became suspicious of Neilson.

Neilson pleaded guilty to making 10 cheques out to cash worth $5540.28 between June 22, 2017 and July 21, 2018.

She also banked 15 cheques into her own bank account worth $6290.66 between December 4, 2017 and August 10, 2018.

Police said the club found Neilson had been making cheques out to cash for the amount of each bill and cashing them herself after a "full audit".

Police also told the court there were a further 15 cheques which were suspected to be fraudulent but the pages were torn out of the book and could not be proved.

When interviewed by police Neilson said she had to pay her sister back for her mother's funeral.

Lawyer Sally Wilson said her client was in a relationship with the president at the time and had a gambling addiction.

"She spiraled downhill at Christmas and credits her son with pulling her out of that," she said.

Magistrate Stella Struthridge said gambling "was a real problem" for Neilson.

"I am impressed you are doing some work in this area but you need to find a new circle of friends to surround you in," she said.

"It will be too hard to go back into the bowls community now."

Neilson was convicted with her sentence with the special condition being placed on the order that she must not attend any gaming venue.
