The six-month mobile imaging service trial will be available to older patients in the southern suburbs who would otherwise attend hospital for an X-ray.
Health Minister Stephen Wade said the trial would meet the government's commitment to deliver care closer to home and ease pressure on emergency departments.
"The service means less disruption for patients by giving them access to simple diagnostic imaging without the need for a visit to the ED and with no out-of-pocket expense," Mr Wade said on Tuesday.
Once fully rolled out, it is estimated the program will reduce the number of ED presentations from nursing homes by up to 1750 each year.
The service will be based at the Repat Health Precinct radiology site and will have capacity for seven appointments a day from Monday to Friday.
Consideration will be given to expanding the mobile service following the trial.
