"I think it's just created a bit of hunger for him," football operations manager Sam Pan said.
"He showed interest in what we're doing at the club, culturally, we're pretty healthy, the numbers are good, we're going OK as a club, it's just the pointy end needs a bit of sharpening."
The Roos haven't played finals since 2010 and currently sit 10 points out of the top five with five rounds left.
"We just think his attention to detail, he picks development areas from players and takes the time to really show the youngsters how to play footy," Pan said.

"He's obviously got a natural footy brain and perhaps a little bit of his experience with modern day football will help as well."
The Roos had six under 17 players in Saturday's 15-point win over Wodonga Saints.
Gun forward Trent Castles kicked 10 of the 18 goals to take his tally to 78 from 12 matches.
He's also looking to play out the year with a shoulder complaint, although he was 'carrying' it against the Saints.
Castles is contracted for next year.
The Roos will also look to name a playing assistant coach to complement Holmes' work off the ground.
Brent Lillis has coached the club the past two seasons.
