A 3-0 win for Patties against the league leaders at Alexandra Park has blown the final five weeks of the season wide open.
Isabella Barbaro gave Patties a 1-0 lead at the break with her first half effort.
Claire Mahoney made it 2-0 eight minutes into the second stanza, while Alex Freire's strike in the dying stages sealed the 3-0 result.
United weren't without their chances through Abbey Collins and Tyler Maolini, but were unable to apply any scoreboard pressure.
ALSO IN SPORT:
St Pats co-coach Brett Easton felt it was another really strong performance.
"I know that United were down a few players and I think that made it hard for them in the last 15-20 minutes, but we played really well," he said.
"Defensively we were strong again, they got through a few times but we were able cover with our scrambling defence."
Easton didn't think they would be challenging for a league title a few weeks ago.
"If it happens, fantastic, but we just want to keep improving and whatever else comes with that is obviously a bonus," Easton said.
Albury United suffered another injury blow with Maree Matthew hurting her ankle in the first half.
In other games, Wangaratta kept its title hopes alive with a 4-0 win against Albury City, while Boomers edged out Melrose 2-1.
The senior women's ladder after round 17 is: Albury United 38, St Pats 37, Wangaratta 34, Albury City 27, Melrose 16, Boomers 16.
