The Canberra man and woman were turning from the Murray Valley Highway to the Kiewa Valley Highway at Bandiana at 4pm when the drama unfolded.
Their blue Toyota sedan collided with a Wodonga-bound red Ford Falcon driven by an Albury man.
The passenger side of the Toyota took the brunt of the impact, resulting in the woman being trapped for more than 30 minutes.
SES crew members cut off the doors on her side of the car before she was freed and taken by ambulance to hospital for assessment.
Sergeant Tim Mooney, of Wodonga police, said the ACT driver would be fined $330 for failing to give way.
He said the couple were headed to the snow and appear to have seen the turn-off to the alps at the last minute.
The crash saw westbound traffic on the Murray Valley Highway diverted to the Kiewa Valley Highway.
But to the police's chagrin many drivers were detected crossing double lines on that road to return sooner to the Murray Valley Highway.
