That, Albury Local Court has heard, was because the victim had carried out an assault while she was at work.
That previous assault led to the victim being banned from Albury's SS&A Club for 10 years.
Defence lawyer Mark Cronin said Luke Daniel Clark was "well-affected by alcohol" when he punched the man.
"He deeply regrets it, very much regrets it," he said.
"He is thankful that no significant injury was suffered by the victim."

Mr Cronin said Clark was a qualified roofing plumber, though there was no work for him in the trade at the moment. That meant he earned his living for now as a hotel security worker.
The court was told the victim, who police said was much smaller than Clark, suffered a lacerated lower lip and and a swollen upper lip.
Clark, 26, pleaded guilty this week to a single charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim was told the victim and some friends went to Beer Deluxe in Albury on December 19 about 11.20pm.
He drank five vodka and raspberries and became "slightly intoxicated".
About 1.35am he was sitting in an outside area with his mates when Clark got a drink from the nearby bar.
Clark then approached the victim.
"It appears the accused said something to the victim before punching him to the face with a closed fist," police said.
"The accused has a muscular build and is significantly bigger than the victim."
The punch caused the victim to fall to the ground and briefly black-out.
Security staff then escorted Clark out of the hotel.
Police said the victim did not recall the incident "at all".
"He does not know who punched him."
When police interviewed Clark at a Lavington unit on December 27 he denied any knowledge of the incident.
Mr Abdul-Karim placed Clark on a 12-month community corrections order and convicted and fined him $200.
