A Wodonga doctor who has provided medical care for people in police custody for more than three decades has been recognised for his service.

Dr John Moran has assisted those in the cells for 30 years and would recommend it to others.
"Give it a go, it's not that scary," he said after recently receiving the service award.
Acting chief custodial health officer Michael Wong said Dr Moran provided a vital service.

Custody doctors assess and manage the health needs of those detained in police cells, or can advise police to transfer detainees to hospital.
"Victoria Police can't do what we need to do without doctors like John Moran," Dr Wong said.
Dr Moran also provides forensic medical services to Victoria Police and is on several boards, including Albury Wodonga Health, the GP Network and La Trobe University.
He has been a general practitioner on the Border for nearly 40 years and said he has no plans to slow down.
