An off-duty sergeant intervened in an incident at a shopping centre, where a man was acting aggressively towards a store manager.
He threatened the sergeant, who struck the offender in self defence.
The man fled and was arrested a short time later on Young Street.
It's alleged the sergeant and an on-duty constable both assaulted the man after his arrest, and will face court on October 22.
