Firefighters were called to the Captain Cook Drive property about 3pm on Tuesday.
Albury Central fire brigade station commander Nick Beattie said a woman and her baby fled the home after the fire broke out.
"The kitchen was destroyed and there was smoke damage throughout," he said.
"It's a stark reminder that a moment's inattention while cooking can have catastrophic effects.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"It's another example of a working smoke alarm alerting the occupants, but our other message is that people need to keep looking while cooking."
Mr Beattie said the woman had done the right thing by leaving the home and not returning, and calling Triple-0.
"We knew no-one was inside so rescuing people wasn't an issue, and we could focus on extinguishing the fire," he said.
