Mount Hotham management has stated that across the resort from June disposable coffee cups will be 100 per cent compostable.
An estimated 1.5 tonnes of throwaway coffee cups are being sold each season and dumped at Cobungra, 34 kilometres from the resort.
Senior manager of resort operations Nick Malkin said while there had been a switch to ecologically-friendly cups, the blanket move would remove uncertainty.
"Some of our operators have had biodegradable cups for several years now but there is real confusion among the general public about which cups are compostable or recyclable," Mr Malkin said.
"We are introducing compostable coffee cups because it will take away that confusion and by communicating that all cups are compostable it will make it far simpler to collect and compost.
"We believe initiatives like this will roll out across individual states and even nationwide in the coming years, so we are keen to lead the way and have control over where our coffee cups go."
Mr Malkin said he expected the outlay on the 100,000 green cups and lids would be offset by landfill savings, resulting in the move being cost neutral.
The Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board will buy 100,000 cups from Sydney company BioPak featuring two designs tailored to the Victoria's highest snow resort.
Board chief executive Jon Hutchins trumpeted the move as a first for an Australian alpine tourist hub.
"This strengthens Mount Hotham's position as the most environmentally responsible alpine resort," he said.
"Use of the compostable cups will be mandatory across the resort, but I'm pleased to say that all our operators wholeheartedly support this initiative."
Various recycling initiatives saw the resort's landfill waste fall 112.5 tonnes from 2010 to 2017.
