Stefan Nikollaj, of Melbourne, was last year fined $1000 by the Magistrates Court and ordered to forfeit the cash, which had been seized after police caught him speeding through Wodonga on his way to Sydney in October 2016.
He appealed the conviction for dealing with proceeds of crime and the case was listed in Wodonga County Court on Wednesday.
But despite a warning from another judge in early October to get legal representation, Nikollaj tried to organise a lawyer by phone only in recent weeks - by phone and text message, then visiting the lawyer's office on Monday.
MORE NEWS FROM COURT:
County Court Judge Christopher Ryan said the "ridiculous" efforts were well below the bare minimum.
"I regard your efforts in prosecuting your own appeal as pathetic," he said.
He gave Nikollaj a final chance to get organised and adjourned the case until November 12.
