Michael McCormack was told about the project by Moira and Federation council chiefs yesterday.
Following the meeting at Yarrawonga, the Nationals leader pointed to federal cash sources.
"We've got a lot of road programs and bridge programs and just our overall infrastructure bucket that we can look at, where we can potentially fund just these sorts of projects," Mr McCormack said.
He plans to write to state roads ministers Jaala Pulford (Victoria) and Paul Toole (NSW) about the project.
Mr McCormack noted the new $323 million Echuca-Moama Murray River bridge was being funded via each state contributing 30 per cent and the Commonwealth 40 per cent.
"Let's see where states are with this, I'm happy to negotiate, I want to bring projects forward because it does mean jobs," he said.
Mr McCormack said the span was at a "embryonic stage" in design and funding.
Moira mayor Libro Mustica was rapt at Mr McCormack's comments.
"It's brilliant, we've been waiting to get him on board, to get the federal government on board and present that to the states," Cr Mustica said.
"Embryonic stage is that five years or 10 years we don't know, but by pushing this on now it's potentially bringing it forward."
Mr McCormack's visit followed the chairs of the Green Route Community Group John Lawless and Mulwala Progress Association Robert Purtle writing a joint letter to him calling for federal cash.
