It's been ten years since the two-time Toni Wilson Medallist coached the Pigeon's A-grade side, with Gillies appointment marking a major coup for the club.
Gillies has previously had two stints at the helm, coaching Yarrawonga from 1996 to 2003 and again in 2007 to 2009.
In that time the Pigeons made seven A-grade grand finals and won two premierships, in 2001 and 2009, under Gillies leadership.
The returned coach said the time felt right to take on the role again.
"My kids are a bit older and I thought now would be a good time to get back into it," Gillies said.
"I gave it up 10 years ago and have been around the club ever since.
"I got involved in the back half of last season, just helping out with sitting on the A-grade bench and being a sounding board for the coaches, and took some training sessions.
"I just thought yeah, I'm ready to get back into it."
Gillies takes over from outgoing coaches Kaitlyn Cummins and Laura Irvine.
The sister duo led the Pigeons to a preliminary final in their first season as co-coaches, bowing out to two-time reigning premiers Wangaratta.
Gillies admits it's an exciting time at the club with a number of talented juniors coming through the ranks, including club best and fairest winner Elle Brooks and O and M rising star nominee Tilly Kennedy.

Both Yarrawonga's B and C-grades made it into grand finals this season, with C-grade claiming a premiership.
"I think we have a really good mix of senior and junior players, and hopefully we can attract some new juniors to the club as well," Gillies said.
"I think the fact that our C-grade and B-grade sides were so successful, there's a lot of potential at the club, so that's exciting
"I think we were really unlucky that we didn't make it through to the (A-grade) grand final.
"I'm really looking forward to the season starting, I can't wait."
Gillies joined Yarrawonga mid-way through the 1995 season and is regarded highly for her leadership both as a player and coach.
She racked up over 200 A-grade games for the Pigeons, taking out three club best and fairest awards along the way.
The former Ovens and Murray representative coach was recognised for her netball achievements in the league's Hall of Fame in 2016.
2018 marked the end of a record-breaking run for the Pigeons who made 11 successive grand final appearances, including seven premierships, when they fell to Albury in a semi-final.
The club has also appointed premiership player Rebecca Carlyle (nee Davis) as coach of the under-16's next season, with coaches yet to be finalised for the remaining two grades.
