The 22-year-old won gold in the automotive refinishing section of the regional World Skills competition, and is now eligible to be part of the Victorian team competing in the nationals in August.
"We were given a door to paint and judged on safety equipment, all the prep work - every detail," he said.
"This will be my first time at nationals; I'm not sure what to expect."
GOTAFE automotive and engineering team leader Mark Ward said Mr Smith had won a number of apprentice of the year awards.
"He's great with colour and he finishes things off nicely - he's just got a passion for the trade," he said.
"We compete against every state in Perth next year."
Mr Smith is now a fourth year apprentice at Albury Auto Body Repairs.
"I do a bit of everything really, panel beaters repair the panels, and we prime and paint them," he said.
"I love working here, there's lots of support - Di and Andrew [Harvey] are great."
