A few isolated locations may be fortunate enough to receive above average rain this summer.

Late Wednesday afternoon, November 20, the town of Forrest located in the Eucla district of southern inland Western Australia reset a new November heat record of 45.5 after a record 45.1 last Saturday (November 16).

The first 18 days of November were unusually cool. The mean maximum temperature is currently 23.5 degrees at Wangaratta and this was two degrees below normal and the coldest in November for 20 years.

It has been much the same across Victoria, but up to more than four degrees below normal at Horsham in the Wimmera.

This cooler than normal spell is coming to an abrupt end.

Very hot weather, which has been sitting over most of Western Australia since early October, invaded the Albury-Wodonga area by Wednesday, November 21 and will persist periodically into December.

The past week in Western Australia has seen many temperature records for November broken - particularly in the Gascoyne, Goldfields and the southern inland regions.

Meekathara recorded 44.0 degrees, Mt.Magnet recorded 44.1, 44.3 and 45.2 on three successive days - each one of these was new records for November.

Southern Cross reported 44.6; Paraburdoo, 44.7; Karlgoolie, 44.7 and Norseman, Salmon Gums and Forrest all reported 45 degrees, whilst the outstations of Laverton and Warburton both recorded 44.8.

The previous hottest November days on record at these stations listed above had a tendency to occur in the years - 1913, 1951, 1957, 1959, 1962, 1966,1968, 1990, 1996, 2007, 2009 and 2015.

The records for North East Victoria after all these past years of record-high November temperatures in Western Australia show that the following summer season was distinctly hotter than normal, but not very dry.

Most of these had the heaviest rains with thunderstorms around Christmas Day and again near the end of January and early February.

The hottest days are anticipated for early December, just before Christmas and mid-January.
