Cod season kicks off next Sunday, December 1 in both Victoria and NSW and it just can't come soon enough for most.
This season's prediction is for another belter I reckon. With all the releases being made in just about every river and stream in our region just about every year, it's no accident either.
A big shout out has to go to all those clubs, and particularly the core groups within those clubs, that keep them functioning.
A lot of these people have been involved in these stockings over many years and have played no small part in producing the cod fishing we have today.
Obviously, fisheries departments in both states can take a bow too and I'll say it again, it's great to see our licence money working for us.
Just about everywhere is looking great.
The Upper Murray will fish well but is a little fickle when water levels move about dramatically, so it's just one of those "have to wait and see" kinda things.
The Ovens, King, Kiewa, Mitta and Murray below Albury will all fall into that category too I suppose but I'm confident they'll all fish well.
Dare I say it, Lake Hume would even be worth a visit if the numbers of cod caught over the past few weeks are any indication.
You could do worse than drag a big Stumpy or similar around those steep rocky ledges and along a stump or two near the old river beds in the upper reaches of the lake.
Mulwala should also go well after the breeding break and of course, the following weekend is the Lake Mulwala Classic comp weekend.
If you're into competitions this is a great one to get involved in, with multiple chances of winning boat and motor packages as well as just about anything else to do with fishing.
Wherever you go, have a great and safe weekend and may the Murray Cod gods be with you!!
AT A GLANCE
Dartmouth (54.39 per cent): fished really well for the TBS Marine Women's Classic last weekend and the weather didn't disappoint either.
There were 224 trout registered of which 209 were browns and 17 were rainbows and 78 were released in the catch and release section.
Biggest brown tipped the scales at 1.565kg and biggest rainbow went .735g.
Keep in mind competitors were only allowed to weigh in two fish per day each so many more trout were landed.
Susan Hunt won the individual champion's trophy, with Mandy Gay runner-up.
Karen Finster was the lucky winner of the TBS Marine boat and motor package.
There were too many winners to give everyone a mention (sorry ladies) but you can jump on the Dartmouth ladies comp homepage and check out all the results and photos. Again, congrats to all involved in the running of this great event.
Oh, rumour has it that a few yabbies are moving too.
Streams: fished pretty well again last week as we haven't had any major weather events to muck them around.
I really don't think it will make much difference which one you head for at the minute, they are all fishing ok.
There are a few tiny hoppers starting to get about too so sounds like floating a couple of those about isn't far away either although a worm or two seems to be doing the job pretty well anyway.
Lake Hume (35.82 per cent): has dropped just over one per cent in the past week.
Despite the drop, the fishing's improved with the warmer weather and with reports of some reasonable reddies on worms, plastics and blades so it might be worth heading out.
Some decent yella are also getting caught on blades but just as many are coming off slow-rolled grubs, trolling or bait too.
They have certainly improved this week, although not in massive numbers as yet.
The reddies we've been hearing about are mainly in that 7 to 10 metre mark, with quite a few small ones mixed up with the keepers.
At least you can head out with a bit more hope of at least getting a taste by the looks of it.
Blowering (50.2 per cent): fishing pretty well at the moment, particularly for bait fishos. The yellas have picked up in numbers and cod fishos are also doing pretty well, particularly on larger yabbies.
Fishos using chicken or cheese will catch cod but virtually eliminate any chance of catching a yella. Lure fishing has been a bit tough and so have those redfins.
Eildon (46.33 per cent): was patchy again last week. Like fishing anywhere, some fishos have done well and others not so much.
The Snowy Lakes were tough again this week but with a fair few insects hatching in this warmer weather we still live in hope of improvement.
