Opening at the Butter Factory Theatre on Tuesday night, Rabbit Hole explores these themes with compassion, wit and bravery.
Director Gabriella Rose-Carter said in our culture grief and loss had long been taboo subjects, which generated much shame.
Rose-Carter said the shared experience of theatre allowed people to weigh into the arena in a safe space.
"The theatre allows people to think more, feel more and, I dare say, laugh more," she said.
"The characters in this play are brave, the actors need to be brave to become them and the people in the audience need to be brave to watch it."
Rose-Carter said the set recreated a suburban living space in which the audience could feel at home.
"I really wanted to bring that intimacy here to HotHouse," Rose-Carter said.
"It doesn't matter where you sit in the theatre, from the stage to the audience should be as intimate as possible."
The play is part of HotHouse's CELSIUS: Independent Theatre program.
Rabbit Hole shows at the Butter Factory Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm. Bookings: hothousetheatre.com.au.
