Sunday night's attack occurred in front of Scott Andrew Ricketts' young son, and also involved the 42-year-old throwing a bag at his ex-partner and threatening to kill her.

"I'll f---ing shoot you," he yelled at her outside his Wodonga home after attacking her boyfriend through the window of his car.

"I'll blow your head off your shoulders."

The dispute arose when the woman arrived at his home with her new partner, which sent Ricketts "over the edge".

He drove after the pair for several hundred metres on Melbourne Road as they drove towards the police station.

The incident occurred while Ricketts was on bail for persistently breaching an intervention order by texting the woman.

He was arrested on Monday and faced court yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to a string of charges.

Magistrate David Faram said he was concerned by a report where Ricketts said his ex-partner pushed his buttons, and he had reacted.

"I've definitely been provoked ... it just seems a little bit one-sided to me your honour, that's all," the 42-year-old said.

The magistrate said he couldn't use violence to solve his issues.

He sighed loudly, crossed his arms, banged his head against a wall and didn't look at Mr Faram as the sentence was handed down.

He tried to walk out before Mr Faram finished reading out his decision and at one point slammed a door leading to the cells.

Ricketts will serve four months in jail, followed by an 18-month community corrections order.
