Town Crier is an online magazine video show overseen by Border identity and comedian John Walker and freelance director/producer John Kovacs.

The not-for-profit project began in August, involving 30-minute shows shot on location with about three cameras.

As well as organised interviews, Town Crier includes a Streetwalker segment that canvasses opinions from passers-by.

Kovacs, who grew up on the Border and was once employed at Prime7, said he and Walker had worked together at various times over the years and decided to collaborate.

"I do the behind the scenes sort of stuff and he does in front of the camera," Kovacs said.

"It's a bit of a voice for the people, I guess."

Geoff Beck, Ziggy Kovacs and Marcel Kovacs are also part of the crew, which on Saturday filmed pieces featuring Flying Fruit Fly Circus and next week's HotHouse Theatre show Edlmayr by The Reginas.

Interviewees so far have included past and present Indi MPs Cathy McGowan and Helen Haines, Lizette Salmon of Repair Cafe Albury-Wodonga, Tracey Esler, Peter Klein, veterans discussing post-traumatic stress and members of the Murray Valley Sanctuary Refugee Group.

Kovacs said people had responded well to Town Crier on social media and been prepared to share their thoughts in the street.

"People are opening up within like 30 seconds ... which is wonderful," he said.

"I don't like to go in too planned and that way it can go where it needs to go, in that moment."

Topics might range from mental health, religious beliefs, sexuality, police or education to your first car experience or views about pineapple on pizzas.

Now based in Canberra and moving between the political and corporate scenes, Kovacs said he found Town Crier more satisfying.

"Because I'm working with such a good group of people," he said.

"It's just a privilege for us to have the tools to chat to people."

One man mentioned his struggles with drugs.

"He said (Town Crier) is such a good thing, it gives me the confidence to speak out as well, speak in public'," Kovacs said.

"So we've had some signs along the way that we're doing the right thing."
