But none were more surprised with their Christmas baby than Renee and Patrick Lowe, who were visiting family on the Border from Ballarat.
Their third child Mason Patrick Lowe was born three weeks early and just scraped in to the December 25 birthday when he was welcomed into the world at 12.06am.
"It was definitely not expected," Mrs Lowe said.
"We booked into a caravan park here to visit family for Christmas and he wasn't due until January 15 so we thought we would be well and truly right.
"All my doctors back home told me to go and have some family time before bub comes.
"But I started getting these pains and I just knew he was coming early and he was just born on Christmas Day.

Mason was born weighing 3270 grams (7lb 3oz) and is baby brother to Jack, 5 and Evie, 2.
Tangambalanga couple Abbey Chettleburgh and Josh Neilson welcomed their first child at 3.05am on Christmas Day when Jed was born.
He was right on time, coming into the world on his due date and weighing 3480 grams (7lb 10oz).
"I knew he would come Christmas Day," Miss Chettleburgh said.
"But he wasn't the first one, the nurses told me about baby Mason being born first.
"My dad has already decided we will have a special birthday celebration for him sometime in July or the middle of the year so his birthday isn't forgotten at Christmas.
"It is pretty special to have a Christmas baby though, we are so in love with him."
Zion-Drew Kingston Bray decided to come two days early when he was born at 7.25am on Christmas Day.
And for his parents, Lavington couple Peta Hartley and Daniel Bray, suspicious they would have a Christmas baby started when they found out their due date.
"He was due on the 27th so since we found out my mum always said he would come on Christmas Day," Miss Hartley said.
"I knew he was going to be early too.
"It kind of runs in my family now I guess, I have a cousin who was born on Christmas Day so that is pretty special.
Zion-Drew is their first child and was born weighing 2460 grams (5lb 6oz).
