The mercury in Albury-Wodonga is tipped to reach 45 degrees - just 0.3 degrees shy of the record on January 16, 2019, which just tipped the February 7, 2009, Black Saturday record of 44.8 degrees.
The Border sweltered through one of the worst fire days yesterday as temperatures reached 42.1 degrees at 2.16pm. Today has been declared a total fire ban in NSW.
Yarrawonga is expected to reach 46 degrees on Saturday. That would equal the hottest day ever recorded, on Black Saturday, of 46.0 degrees.

Wangaratta and Rutherglen are the best bet at breaking records, with 46 degrees predicted in both towns - the record is 45.8 and 45.6 degrees respectively.
"We are seeing severe to extreme heat wave conditions again developing across large parts of south eastern Australia," Bureau of Meterology extreme weather forecaster Jonathan How said.
"Ahead of the cold front coming through we are seeing very strong and gusty north to north-westerly winds and the potential for dry thunderstorms to come through.
"We are seeing thunderstorms spark up in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania which have the potential to spark up new fires which is a major concern for firefighters.
"There is a cool change on the way but we are expecting the dangerous heat to move in."
