The Liberal Party head joined political colleagues, including member for Benambra Bill Tilley, for a briefing, on the blazes, at the Tallangatta control centre.
"We need to show the people of the North East that while a lot of the media focus in Melbourne has been on Gippsland fires we know the North East has been badly affected," Mr O'Brien said.
"We want to let people here know we know that they're going through a bloody tough time and we want them to know we will be there for them and we will be fighting for them to get through this and bounce back and recover."
Mr O'Brien said concerns about fuel supplies and power reliability in Corryong were two key issues raised in the briefing.
"It's a bad fire, it's bad, and it's devastation," he said.
"I'm certainly on call, pager ready to go, I'm meant to be on shift Saturday next (today) because Wodonga group was rested for two days and we've had assets from CFA from other parts of the state which is good."
"This is not the time for people to play politics over these sorts of decisions, we want to keep people safe."
