It's our fault, actually
I cringe when I see the video of people and firefighters withholding their hand (shake) from Scott Morrison and then he is desperately grasping their hand. It's sad and cruel and uncomfortable. Look, it's not his fault. It's all our fault. We created this mess with our lavish lifestyles and demand for crap from retail outlets and never-ending entertainment to keep us amused as we became more disconnected from nature.

We voted for the politicians (including Scott Morrison) that let climate change drag on making fire seasons worse than ever. This is so human, to look for the culprit and never look in the mirror. That is exactly why we are where we are. Well, nature is reminding us in a big way that we are not disconnected. Nature will have the last word on this.

Ignoring the facts
I couldn't let Father Brendan Lee's piece (December 19) on the folly of declaring global emergencies go unchallenged. He likened the present climate change activism, lead by the young generation to be what he called another "Chicken Little'' episode.
He downplayed what has been achieved when a number of past global challenges have been dubbed emergencies, claiming the thinning ozone has healed itself in spite of CFC rising. Monitoring has detected that CFC 11 has been rising in Asia since 2013. What he failed to point out is that overall levels of all other CFCs is falling. The main reason for the reversal of ozone thinning is the success of the Montreal Protocol 1987 that banned use of CFCs. This is a great example of global action.
Father Lee then went to deny that global action on population growth was an unnecessary burden placed on developing nations. He ignores the fact that the Chinese two child policy pretty much laid the base for bringing the great majority of its population out of poverty and making China an economic power. Population growth is still a global challenge and is a work in progress. If Father Lee thinks the climate change emergency is just another ''Chicken Little'' moment, he must be like our Prime Minister and believes in miracles. We certainly need a big miracle to save the planet, if we continue to fiddle while Australia burns.
