Alaskan Malamute Xena was taken from outside Albury’s Centro shopping plaza on September 20 after owner Victoria Wood-Bradley left her tied to a post.
Ms Wood-Bradley, 21, had dashed into the shopping centre to buy a birthday cake and when she came out, her dog was gone.
Last night Ms Wood-Bradley spoke with staff at Shepparton Council, who told her they believed her dog was in an animal shelter at Shepparton.
She was told Xena had been identified through a microchip and had been at the shelter since September 29, the same day The Border Mail printed a story about the missing dog.
Ms Wood-Bradley is hopeful the dog is Xena.
“I’ve just been jumping around so ecstatic, it’s Christmas and my birthday have come at once, all rolled into one,” she said.
“I’ve never wanted anything more.”
On Sunday, Ms Wood-Bradley found pictures in her letterbox, stills taken from security camera footage at the shopping centre.
They were sent anonymously and showed four people .
Ms Wood-Bradley said they were the same images police had shown her on the day Xena was stolen.
She said police wanted to talk with the four about the stolen dog.
Desperate to get Xena back, Ms Wood-Bradley posted the images on her Facebook page.
More than 150 people had commented on one of the pictures.
Ms Wood-Bradley said some people on Facebook had identified those in the picture, believing they were from Shepparton.
Albury police Insp John Peirce encouraged anyone with information to contact them.
“We hope that if anyone has any information they will bring it to the attention of police and do not try to approach anyone who is believed to be involved,” he said.
If anyone has any information they should call Albury police on (02) 6023 9299.
