Details are being sought about those of Italian origin by the nation's consul general.
Correspondent Mario Vaccaro said many Italian descendents lived in the North East, particularly around Myrtleford and the Kiewa Valley.
"A lot of migrants worked on the Snowy Mountains scheme and then moved to the area once that was completed to make a better life for themselves," he said.
