FORMER Wangaratta star Luke Norman has been sacked as coach of Sturt, only 24 hours after Magpie Daniel Boyle said he would play with the SANFL club.
Although the decision is highly unlikely to change Boyle’s mind to head interstate, Norman admitted yesterday being shocked by it.
“To be called in 5 weeks after the season is over and told I was out, I was definitely surprised,” Norman said.
“I’d done a fair bit of planning for preseason and recruiting, but I’m very thankful for the opportunity I’ve had.
“They believed in me and we had a bit of success, but when you finish on the bottom of the ladder it can wear thin on your capabilities.”
Norman took Sturt to a grand final in his first year at the helm in 2009, but that was followed by fifth and ninth finishes.
He has been replaced by 2002 premiership captain Seamus Maloney — the son of Peter and Mary Maloney — who grew up in Wodonga.
