Detective Acting Inspector Phil Malligan said the sex doll was seized by border force officials in November.
"These dolls, which are lifelike, are legally considered child exploitation material," Detective Acting Inspector Malligan said.
"The matter was referred to the Riverina Police District and our detectives commenced an investigation into the alleged importation, which as a result lead to police and border force officials executing a search warrant at the home address here in Wagga on December 18 last year."
"Following the analysis, police arrested a 59-year-old Wagga man yesterday [Thursday]," he said.
"It will be alleged in court that he is in possession of child exploitation material, which was stored on the man's computer."
The man has since been charged with one count each of intentionally importing prohibited tier 2 goods without approval, and possessing child abuse material under the Customs Act and Crimes Act.
The man will face Wagga Local Court on February 4.
Detective Acting Inspector Malligan said the sex doll had come from an area on the Australian Border Force's radar.
"This lifelike doll has come from China and certainly there are areas around the world that the Australian Border Force look out for and this address in China is one of those addresses," he said.
"If you choose to engage in any kind of activity that sexualises children, we will find out about it and we will put you before the courts. Police are watching."
