Richards has been travelling from Melbourne to play at Norm Minns Oval and will leave a big hole in Luke Morgan's midfield.
His younger brother and dual best and fairest winner, Joe, has joined Northern Blues but will return to the Magpies if not selected to play VFL.
"Nick's been travelling back and just wanted a bit of a change this season," Morgan said.
"He's played some good footy for us and we wish him all the best.

"I'm sure he will do well."
Richards played four VFL matches for Werribee and WIlliamstown while based with the Murray Bushrangers.
Wangaratta has lost four players from last year's grand final side which lost to Lavington with Ben Douthie (retired) and Jamie Anderson (overseas) moving on.
Young forward Frazer Judd has returned to the Magpies after kicking 49 goals for Tarrawingee.
Meanwhile, tall Albury forward Erish Uthayakumar has joined Goulburn Valley league club Euroa due to employment reasons.
Uthayakumar spent three seasons with the Tigers, kicking 47 goals in 19 matches during a solid debut season at the sportsground in 2017.
He dislocated his left ankle during an Ovens and Murray league promo shoot the following pre-season and managed only eight reserve grade matches in the following two years.
The Tigers hope to retain ruckman Ollie McEwan who has been linked to Wodonga.
