Farmers Jason Schilg and Danny Phegan helped rally a huge hay-making operation during the past six weeks, which saw 3000 bales delivered to areas including Jingellic, Corryong, Batlow, Tintaldra and Tumbarumba.

Mr Schilg said he could never have expected the level of generosity that poured from the community as people donated fuel, trucks, paddocks of stubble, machinery and labour to the cause.

"There were a lot of people behind the scenes doing a tonne of work and if I tried to name everyone who helped I'd miss someone for sure," he said on Tuesday.

"I just want to personally thank people who put in a massive effort to help and there's a couple of trucking companies who also donated their own fuel - they did this for nothing.

"A lot of farmers rang to thank us; one person wanted to send a cheque for what we had delivered - I said, well you can do that, but we won't be banking it."

However Mr Schilg, who has had to turn his attention to his own farm as dams run dry and he begins carting water, said there were still plenty of people desperate for hay.

"They've lost everything - their house, sheds, machinery and most of their livestock," he said.

"It's very sad; if people still do have a truck or a bit of hay let me know and I can find somewhere to send it.

"We have nothing left and I don't know what they're going to do."

However out of the ashes, come reports of community spirit going strong among the most fire-ravaged.

One family, who lost their home, fences and half their dairy herd, asked for the donated hay to go to someone "worse off" than them.
