BORDER politician Bridget McKenzie has stayed leader of the Nationals in the Senate despite yesterday departing as deputy leader of her party.

A vote held to determine her replacement as deputy saw Water Minister David Littleproud win that role.
However, Nationals MPs opted to retain Senator McKenzie as its Senate leader, a job she began in July.
Queenslander Matt Canavan also kept his position as deputy Nationals leader, despite resigning as a minister on Monday.
Deniliquin-based Senator Perin Davey, the Nationals whip, lauded the retention.

With the Nationals' three other senators all only being elected last year, the experience of the incumbent leaders helped them keep those jobs.
