The 69 year-old plans to declare on Friday whether he will stand in the council election scheduled to be held on September 12.
Asked about his intentions, Cr van de Ven yesterday declined to say what he would do but hinted at a nomination.
"I've left things to the last minute before (in standing), so I've decided to organise things properly," he said.
"I want to make sure I've got all my stuff lined up, if I do stand."
Cr van de Ven is due to turn 70 in July and has been on the council since 2004.
He and fellow former mayor Alice Glachan are the longest-serving councillors among the current group.
But Cr van de Ven has ruled out emulating his former council colleague Patricia Gould.
Cr van de Ven has chosen Friday's date, February 21, to announce his decision for two significant reasons that cover his personal and professional life.
It was on that date his father died 23 years ago and February 21 was when he opened the Albury Enzed franchise in 1986.
Cr van de Ven continues to operate the Young Street hose business.
He has been the only mayor of Albury, apart from Kevin Mack, since the end of 2013.
