His favourite has to be a Lanz Bulldog, which he insists were "one of the best" back in the day.

The now 89-year-old admits it will be a "few sad days" when his collection of tractors and farm machinery, and in his words "bits and bobs that someone will call treasure", goes under the hammer during a two-day clearing sale next week.

For his family, it was finally time to "let someone else enjoy" what the great-grandfather made his hobby until he was almost 80.

Len and Joan Schilg's Brocklesby property Yallambee will host the action on Thursday and Friday with Paull & Schollard Landmark agents selling off each item.

"It was time to put it all together and what some might call trash I am sure will be someone else's treasure," Mr Schilg said.

If you ask, Mr Schilg could take you back 80 years and tell you every property his family bought and sold and for how much, but if you really want to get him talking it is tractors you need to bring up.

He has been collecting and restoring tractors for most of his life, up until the couple moved into West Albury 10 years ago.

"Our health just got too much for being on the farm so we moved in here," Mr Schilg said.

There is atleast 12 fully restored antique tractors as well as another 12 engines and other farm machinery he has done up over the years.

"It was something I liked to do, get it back to its former glory," Mr Schilg said.

"Joan used to say everytime I got home with something new 'what did you buy that junk for', but then I restored it and moved onto the next project."

Sheds full of farm machinery is up for grabs but it is the 96 items on day two of the sale which Mr Schilg is most attached to.

His daughter Fiona said they were the only things left on his bucket list to restore.

"The Friday will be the big day with a lot of the bigger machinery up for grabs," she said.

"It has been a big job for my sisters and me to put it all together and we just hope someone loves all of the stuff as much as dad has over the years."

Mr Schilg recalled a time he arrived at a farm to buy a tractor off a bloke but driving up the driveway saw a "little one" sitting on the side of the road.

"I asked about it and he said he didn't mind if I bought it but I would have to get it out of the tree," he said.

"The tractor had been there so long the tree had grown through it - so we just got the chainsaw out and cut it out."

For the couple, who have been married almost 64 years, they admit it is a little sad to be selling off everything.

But with a tear in his eye Mr Schilg admits it is the "right thing".

"I can't do anything with it anymore," he said.

"I drove all over the country to get parts and old tractors - I just hope someone restores the ones I didn't get to."

The clearing sale is on Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28 at 1492 Howlong-Goombargana Road, Broklesby from 9am each day.
