Teagan Mayo, Emily Ho and Oliver Jones, all 19, were introduced at their check-in to residential accommodation and were among more than 100 people taking part in campus tours and events.
Mr Jones had travelled the farthest - choosing the Thurgoona campus over Sydney.
"Albury was one of the only places that offered podiatry and I prefer the country feel," he said.
But Ms Ho and Ms Mayo were excited about studying in a setting not too dissimilar from their respective hometowns of Deniliquin and Stockinbingal, near Temora.
"I like how it's small and central, and very community-based like Deni is," Ms Ho said.
"I'm doing nursing for three years ... I like taking care of people and seeing them get better."
Ms Mayo liked the idea of studying a Bachelor of Education (K-12) and wants to teach geography.
"I didn't restrict where I could go and makes for better career opportunities," she said.
"The campus has a really welcoming feel to it."
Charles Sturt University secretary Cassandra Webeck welcomed them to the campus, and said students ranged from school-leavers to parents and career-changers.
"Whichever path has brought you to Charles Sturt, we welcome you and we are confident your time here will be challenging and rewarding," she said.

About 440 on-campus students have been accepted to commence their studies with Charles Sturt at the Albury-Wodonga campus in 2020, in addition to a further 524 new online students.
Orientation events run until Friday and include campus and library tours, laser tag, ten pin bowling, a trivia night, meet and greets with club, sport and student representation delegates, and international and Indigenous student support sessions.
