Lavington man refused bail over 'violent rape' case

Isaac James Latcham failed in a bid for bail over the alleged attack, which left the complainant with a broken arm requiring surgery.

Magistrate Richard Funston said Albury and the wider community had to be protected from Latcham, who was remanded in custody until April 21.

The 38-year-old was arrested at his Prune Street unit over the alleged incidents from mid-March, 2017.

"Sergeant," Mr Funston asked police prosecutor Shannon Lewis, "it's alleged that a lot of this offending took place with a little child present?"

"Yes," Sergeant Lewis replied, "that's my reading of the facts."

Sergeant Lewis said police concerns included Latcham committing further serious offences, the "endangerment of the lady" and the protection of the community.

On conviction, he faced a "very lengthy jail sentence".

"There are numerous serious matters that go back to 2007," Sergeant Lewis said of Latcham's criminal record, which included malicious wounding, intimidation, assaulting police and assaults on several women.

She said that just before his arrest, Latcham - knowing that police were outside - packed a bag of belongings that showed he was fleeing.

But defence lawyer Camille McKay said Latcham was not about to take off, as the bag contained no clothing or personal items.

She said it was not a strong prosecution case and that Latcham had not had contact with the complainant for "a number of years".

"They are matters that with my reading of the facts are not supported by any corroborative evidence, aside from the statement of the alleged victim."

But Mr Funston said the prosecution case was strong on charges including sexual intercourse without consent and counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, at Nowra and Milton.

"The allegations are some of the most serious allegations that the court hears," he said.

"I also note his history of violence."
