Emergency services were called to the tracks just before midnight on Friday night with reports a pedestrian had been hit by a train.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics arrived to find a man in his 20s with a "partially severed arm".
"We got the call for assistance around 11.40pm on Friday night to an incident where a man had been hit by a train in Henty," she said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"He was airlifted to Canberra hospital in a serious but stable condition after being treated at the scene.
"His injuries included a serious compound fracture to his arm, I would say he had a partially severed arm.
"He also had lacerations to his head.
"The driver of the train was also treated and was taken to Wagga Wagga hospital for observation.
"There is no details about the driver or the injuries."
More than 20 emergency service workers were on scene, including four ambulance crews and the air ambulance, police and firefighters.
It isn't known why the man was on the train tracks.
The train line is the major route between Melbourne and Sydney and the train was carrying freight.
