Kimberley Cheree Brown was in custody bail refused over a drunken attack in which she repeatedly kicked and punched her ex-partner.
"Miss Brown, please try to keep control," magistrate Richard Funston told the woman.
"It's just not helping, this wailing, it's just not helping. There's no point in crying ... it just distracts me."
OTHER COURT STORIES:
Brown, 32, pleaded guilty in Albury Local Court to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and contravention of an apprehended violence order.
Police said she previously had been charged on nine occasions, including for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.
They said she also had a "problem" with substance abuse and her mental health.
Defence lawyer Camille McKay submitted that the court could deal with Brown by way of an intensive corrections order, given that a sentence assessment report had found her suitable for unpaid community work.
The court heard that Brown had been sentenced in 2016 to a 14-month jail term.
Police submitted that a jail term would again be appropriate, with a longer parole period to help with Brown's rehabilitation.
"I'm going to give her a chance, actually," Mr Funston replied.
"But it's going to be a strict one."
Mr Funston imposed eight months in custody, though ordered this be served by way of an intensive corrections order.
He told Brown that if she was directed to go into rehabilitation, "that's what you are going to do".
"It's also important that you don't drink and have no contact (with the complainant). You really need to get a lot of help."
Police told the court that Brown and the victim, 54, had been in a three-year relationship and had a child together.
He had been granted an apprehended violence order after the relationship ended.
Brown went to his East Albury home on January 23 just after midnight, breaching the order.
The pair sat on a couch, with Brown so affected by alcohol that the victim could detect a "strong stench".
At one point she became agitated and he asked her several times to leave.
She attacked him in the backyard, at first slapping and then soon after, punching and kicking him.
