With more organisations adhering to advice for social distancing to protect people from coronavirus, Wangaratta Council has asked its residents to tune into Tuesday's meeting via livestream.
It was originally scheduled to be held in Carboor, but will be moved to Wangaratta instead where the internet connection will be far more reliable.
"Given the rapidly evolving situation we face in relation to the COVID-19 virus, the Rural City of Wangaratta has taken steps as a precautionary measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community, protect our staff and visitors, and play our role in the national response to limiting transmissions," the council said in a statement.
"In line with federal and state government recommendations, we will be practising social distancing by cancelling all non-essential public gatherings for at least the next 30 days."
Councillors will still take questions from the public at the meeting, but have asked for them to be emailed in, rather than asked in person.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mayor Dean Rees said the monthly meetings are always livestreamed each month.
"It's not a closed meeting, we're just suggesting that people watch it on live stream rather than coming in," he said.
"We just advise people to try to limit the people who come."
This is the first time North East residents have been asked to not attend a meeting - Wodonga councillors this week had extra space between them at their meeting, but the public were still encouraged to attend.
As the situation quickly changes, Wangaratta Council will also cancel all its all events, shows and programs at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre, library and art gallery, but allow the facilities to stay open for general visits.
All other non-essential community meetings, consultations and programs will be postponed, but the Wangaratta Children's Services Centre will remain open and home care and packaged care will continue to be provided.
"Things will develop over the coming days and weeks, and we will always make decisions with the health and safety of our community and staff in mind," the council stated.
"While physical interactions may be limited during this time, we encourage our community to continue to support and connect with each other."
Questions can be submitted electronically before 10am on Tuesday by emailing council@wangaratta.vic.gov.au.
